About Cahir Castle
Cahir Castle is a large and well-preserved castle in Ireland. It is situated on a rocky island in the River Suir. The castle was constructed in the thirteenth century and was the stronghold of the powerful Butler family. The castle's design was so effective that it was believed to be impregnable, but it was eventually conquered by the earl of Essex in 1599 with the use of heavy artillery.
Cahir Castle was besieged twice more during the Irish Confederate Wars. Today, visitors can appreciate the original structure of the castle, which was at the cutting edge of defensive castle design at the time of its construction. An audiovisual show provides a detailed history of the castle for visitors. Additionally, Cahir Castle is a popular location for filming movies and TV shows, including Excalibur and The Tudors.
