About Clonmacnoise
St CiarĂ¡n founded his monastery in the 6th century on the banks of the River Shannon. The monastery became a renowned University of its time, attracting students from all over Europe. Today, visitors can see the ruins of this historic site, which includes a Cathedral, two round Towers, three high crosses, nine Churches, and over 700 Early Christian graveslabs.
The purpose-built visitor centre adjacent to the monastic enclosure is home to the original high crosses, including the magnificent 10th century Cross of the Scriptures. It offers visitors the chance to learn about the site's fascinating history and appreciate the intricate details of the early Christian artifacts on display.
