How To Explore The North In 5 Days

A five day tour of the north of Ireland can be an amazing way to experience the best of what the region has to offer.

One possible itinerary for a tour of the north of Ireland starting in Dublin and finishing in Sligo could include the following:

Dublin

Start your tour by exploring the city of Dublin. Visit some of the city's top attractions, such as Trinity College, the Guinness Storehouse, and the Dublin Castle. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Irish meal and some live music at a local pub.

Day 2

Titanic Belfast, a museum for all things Titanic related. One of the things you will often hear here is, "We [the Northern Irish] built it, but the English [the English captain] sank it." (May, 2020). Photo by K. Mitch Hodge, Unsplash.

Belfast

From Dublin, we make your way to the historic town of Belfast. Visit the Titanic Belfast museum, where you can learn about the city's maritime history, and the historic Crumlin Road Gaol, which was once a working prison. In the evening, perhaps enjoy a show at the Grand Opera House.

Day 3

Co Antrim and Derry

Leaving Belfast, we travel north along the Antrim Glens coastal route and visit the beautiful Giant's Causeway on the north coast of County Antrim. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a unique natural formation of hexagonal columns formed by ancient volcanic activity. After exploring the Causeway, we make our way to Derry, where you can learn about the city's rich history and culture on a walking tour of the City Walls with a local guide.

Day 4

Donegal

Crossing into County Donegal we explore the ancient and mystical Grianán of Áileach hillfort. From there we make our way through the Glenveagh National Park and Dunlewey to the west coast with exceptional scenery over the Wild Atlantic Way. After lunch, we visit the Slieve League cliffs, which are some of the highest sea cliffs in Europe. From there, we make our way to Donegal Town, where you can explore the beautiful Donegal Castle and learn about the history of the region. In the evening, enjoy a traditional Irish music session in a local pub.

Day 5

Co Sligo

On the final day of your tour, visit the historic County of Sligo. Here at Drumcliffe, you can find the grave of the famous Irish poet W.B. Yeats and explore the wonderful Neolithic graves landscape at Carrowmore. For the mildly energetic we complete your tour with a walking visit to Knocknarea mountain, where you can enjoy exceptional views of the surrounding countryside, from the huge cairn of Queen Maeve’s grave.

Overall, a five day tour of the north of Ireland can be a wonderful way to experience the best of what the region has to offer, from its rich history and culture to its beautiful natural landscapes.
